Timothy
Timothy was at Rome with Paul. After the death of Paul, Timothy, it is said, spent most of his time in Ephesus, and there suffered martyrdom under Domitian during the same persecution that sent John to Patmos. At this period, as the pagans were about to celebrate a feast called Catagogian, Timothy, meeting this procession, severely reproved them for their ridiculous idolatry, which so exasperated the people that they fell upon him with their clubs, and beat him in so dreadful a manner that he expired of the bruises 2 days after.
Timothy was the celebrated disciple of Saint Paul, and the first Bishop of Ephesus, where he zealously governed the church until the year 97. Probably Timothy was 34 or 35 when left in charge of the church of Ephesus. Paul - This charge I commit unto thee, son Timothy, according to the prophecies which went before on thee, that thou be them mightest war a good warfare. Holding faith, and a good conscience; which some having put away concerning faith have made shipwreck.
[330, 334, 338, 377, I Timothy]
